"Consumer Electronics Show" CES: The future is made in Las Vegas

At almost the same time, Audi, Bosch, Continental, Daimler, Schaeffler and many other representatives of the German high-tech industry are presenting their plans for the future at the CES trade fair in Las Vegas, in the Trump-addled United States of all places. Anyone who now says "CES, what's that?" need not be ashamed. Because it is also unknown that Minister Scheuer knows the abbreviation CES.

From Consumer Electronics Show to World's Leading Trade Fair

CES simply stands for "Consumer Electronics Show". However, CES has quietly developed into one of the world's top events for future technology. Meanwhile, most people in our German-speaking country think first and foremost of CEBIT in Hanover when they think of future technology and electronics trade fairs. We are obviously not much different from Mr. President Trump with his "America First".

But wait: we have been thinking about CEBIT so far. Because "Europe's leading digital event has been canceled"; it will "reorganize its trade fair portfolio for digital topics", announced organizer Deutsche Messe AG at the turn of the year. This certainly also has to do with the fact that "next-gen innovation to the world", i.e. almost the entire global innovation industry from IT to security, smart cities and mobility, feel more comfortable in the gamer's paradise of Las Vegas than in staid Hanover.

"Technologies that change our daily lives" will be exhibited at CES, the organizers praise themselves. Mobility, health, intelligent and sustainable cities are just some of the topics. Yes, our well-known companies are of course also represented there. But the Süddeutsche Zeitung noted that "China is showing its power". And the Tagesschau raved about "smart cars and talking cats".

More and more "smart cars" and other means of transportation are being developed by smart technology companies. Or from "passionate individuals": this is how the founders of Ujet describe themselves. They boldly call their folding scooter of the same name "the redefinition of urban mobility".

The electric giant Panasonic, on the other hand, is presenting an electric car study for families as well as a variable small electric vehicle for delivery or service work.

The series could go on and on.

Suppliers become car manufacturers

But electronics manufacturers no longer just want to be suppliers to car manufacturers. At Valeo in France, a 7,500-euro e-car was driving around. Schaeffler from Germany presented a thoughtful four-wheeled transportation electric bicycle called "Bio-Hybrid": This is said to be able to travel on cycle paths without a license plate. This should give Germany's pedalists a lot of fun in the battle for free space on their 80-centimetre lanes...

Networking in the center

But CES thinks further than just an electronics show. It networks. "Welcome to the smart city" is not just an empty phrase there.

No, there are solutions. Self-driving vehicles like Toyota's autonomous minibus

Must have 100 percent mobile network coverage, according to the conferences "Future of Connected Cars with 5G" and "5G and Self-Driving Vehicles: A Policy Roadmap". "Data transfer without delay is essential", otherwise there would be no security. Nevertheless, the federal tender for the 5G standard requires just 99% coverage. And while this network is unlikely to be installed in this country any time soon, "6G and the Quantum Internet" will probably already be up and running elsewhere: Experts were already talking about this at CES.

Energy for sustainable cities

"Connecting the Autonomous World" was the title of another congress. Because mobility and life in the city are closely linked. Bosch, for example, declared that it is building technology "invented for`connected life". Smart homes, cities, mobility, production: everything will soon be connected.

However, a lot of energy is required to keep all of this in operation. "Fueling Big Cities" was the title of the corresponding CES congress. It was all about sustainability and environmental compatibility. No longer about coal or oil for steam power plants.

Only one area of the CES, the "STEAM Powered Play" conference, dealt with steam. Its aim: "We are discussing the powerful role of toy steam engines so that children can develop the energy technology of the future."
