Reit im Winkl Biomasse-Heizwerk und Nahwärmeversorgung

Description

As a pioneering project in Germany, Reit im Winkl implemented a decentrally planned biomass heating plant that integrated all of the village's heat consumers into the planning from the outset. With a thermal output of 14 MW and a local heating network of 19 km in length, it now supplies around 400 households, businesses and facilities

🔧 Technology & Output

  • Biomass grate boiler (14 MW) feeds a comprehensive local heating network
  • 19 km of district heating pipes connect the heating plant with approx. 400 heat consumers
  • Over 90% of heat demand covered by renewable energy
  • 500 connected buildings after 18 years - including private and commercial customers
  • 35.000 m³ of wood chips per year - from regional forestry and sawmill residue

🌱 Ecology, neighbourhood planning & success

  • CO₂-neutral operation - wood as a climate cycle energy source
  • Emission savings: approx. 3-4 Mio. l of heating oil replaced per year
  • Significantly improved air quality - climatic health resort status secured
  • Citizen participation: Supported by over 90 local shareholders, including the municipality and E-On
  • Buffer capacities: Supplemented in 2015/16 by large storage tanks for peak load optimization

💡 Why Reit im Winkl is a beacon of heat supply

  • A rare example of nationwide community-wide, holistic planning - from the very first house.
  • Innovative combination of regional value creation, climate protection and citizen participation.
  • Technical optimization, e.g. flue gas condensation, hydraulic balancing and control, leads to high efficiency, stability and low emissions
  • System grows with you - supplied today, with expansion option for further addressees.
