Description
The Max Planck Society operates an Institute for Plasma Physics for research into nuclear fusion at the Garching site near Munich. The site has a central heating system with 3 boilers. Distribution takes place via a district heating network at a temperature level of up to 100 °C.
Gammel Engineering developed a concept for expanding the existing heating center with a combined heat and power (CHP) system. The Max Planck Institute (IPP) is also installing a natural gas CHP plant with an electrical output of approx. 400 kWel and integrating this into the existing supply. The CHP unit also provides a heat output of approx. 500 kW, which is fed into the district heating pipeline. Both the electricity and heat generated are used exclusively and entirely for the research site's own supply.
