Eichstätt Integration BHKW Osram

Description

At the Osram site in Eichstätt, Gammel Engineering impressively demonstrates how modern combined heat, power and cooling (CHP) redefines industry. As the technical architect of this plant, we have implemented a pioneering energy system: a natural gas-fired combined heat and power plant with 2 MW of electrical and thermal output forms the centerpiece - precisely dimensioned for continuous 3-shift operation with annual lamp production of 380 million light bulbs.

The innovative absorption chiller with 750 kW (or 738 kW) ideally complements the system and uses the waste heat not only for heating, but also for cooling. The CHP system covers an impressive 50% of the electricity requirement, 77% of the heat and 73% of the cooling for the production process.

With over 8,000 full-load hours for the CHP unit and around 7,800 hours for the AKM, we achieve peak values for capacity utilization and efficiency. The central heat supply feeds in approx. 90 % of the heating requirement, the new cooling network (13/19 °C) replaces 32 decentralized compression chillers. The buffering (50 m³) also ensures continuous operation in summer.

The investment volume of around €3.5 million resulted in a system that was named "CHP plant of the year" in 2015 - an outstanding recognition of technical excellence and sustainable impact.
