Biburg Biogasanlage

Description

A pilot project that is unique in Germany was realized in Biburg: For the first time, an ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) system was used in combination with a combined heat and power plant. This innovative technology uses an organic working medium instead of water, which evaporates at low temperatures and drives a generator via a screw machine. This efficiently converts previously unused waste heat into additional electricity - a real milestone for the energy efficiency of decentralized biogas plants.

The heart of the plant is a CHP unit with 640 kW of electrical power. The ORC system, which achieves a net electrical output of 70 kW, was installed directly behind it. It not only generates energy from the entire exhaust gas heat of the CHP unit, but also uses the engine and mixture cooler heat to generate electricity. This intelligent integration increases the overall electrical efficiency of the system from around 40% to around 44% - without the need for additional biogas. Especially for operators who do not have access to the natural gas grid and cannot use nearby heat sinks, this system offers a forward-looking solution for increasing efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
