Wood pellets are cylindrically pressed pieces of untreated wood. Wood pellets are usually made from sawdust and wood shavings and have a diameter of 5 to 9 mm and a length of 3 mm to 10 cm. The pelleting and drying process produces a compact fuel that is easy to transport and requires little space for storage. In addition, wood pellets are very free-flowing and can therefore be conveyed automatically in the respective system. One kilogram of wood pellets achieves a calorific value of approx. 5 kWh, which is roughly equivalent to the calorific value of half a liter of heating oil.
