Standardized designations

According to DIN, a distinction is made between the following designations:

  • Steam turbine: It is the pure power machine with the rotating components,
  • Steam turbine set: In addition to the steam turbine, it consists of the connected working machines and, if necessary, a gearbox,
  • Steam turbine unit: This refers to the entirety of the steam turbine, driven machine, condenser and connected piping.

Other designations

  • According to the direction of flow: axial turbine and radial turbine
  • According to the working process: action turbine (reduction of the enthalpy drop on the guide vanes) and reaction turbine (reduction of the enthalpy drop on the guide vanes and the rotor blades)
  • After the steam condition: hot steam, wet steam turbine and high-pressure, medium-pressure and low-pressure turbine
  • After the steam supply: Pure steam, exhaust steam and storage steam turbine
  • After steam removal: condensation, extraction condensation and backpressure turbine
