Fast-growing tree species such as willows, poplars and Chinese reeds are planted in short rotation plantations with the aim of producing wood as a renewable raw material within short rotation periods. During harvesting, the raw material obtained is chopped and processed into woodchippings. The rootstocks remain in place during the harvest and new shoots grow for the next harvest. As long as the rotation periods are no longer than 20 years, SRC areas are considered arable land and the farmer continues to receive his previous subsidies.
