The secondary balancing power must be available within 5 minutes. It is used to balance fluctuations in the electricity grid in the medium term and is traded via the balancing energy market. Around 2000 MW are required for this. The providers receive a power price for the pure provision of power reserves, as well as a working price if these reserves are used to balance the grid. In this case, the supplier ramps the system up or down within 5 minutes and thus balances the electricity grid. The balancing works both in the event of electricity overproduction (negative balancing power) and electricity shortages (positive balancing power).
