Energy Glossary

Heat pump

A heat pump absorbs heat from the environment (e.g. air, water or ground) and raises the temperature level of the heat to a level that is sufficient to heat a building by using additional mechanical energy. As a rule, a compressor is used to compress the absorbed heat and increase the energy level. The efficiency of a heat pump is described by the coefficient of performance, which represents the ratio of the additional (electrical) energy supplied to the usable heat.
